Famous Puppet Death Scenes

Your rating: None Average: 1.4 (17 votes)

If you're looking for something to do between now and the 27th, we here at FWIS strongly suggest you take in Famous Puppet Death Scenes at the Young Theatre/Soulpepper complex at the Distillery. A series of 22 brief skits over an hour "taken from the greatest puppet shows in history" will entertain you with their creativity and wit, and in some cases leave you pensive and/or confused. Much like the One's permanent state of mind.

For more information about the troupe presenting the show, visit their site at http://theoldtrouts.org. The cost of the show is $30 a seat, or you can take your chances with last minute seat sales for $15 each.

Kooza is no Looza

Your rating: None Average: 1.3 (16 votes)

If you'd like to visit a different circus from the one in the Duchy, we strongly recommend you wend your way down to the Wasteland South of the Don to take in Cirque Du Soleil's new production - Kooza.

Over the years The One has been to a number of Cirque productions - actually, right from their beginnings, and From Where We Sit, this is one of the best. Past shows had, we thought, overly convoluted and obscure storylines that distracted us from the circus acts. Not this one. Kooza takes us back to some of the Cirque's more simple origins while adding style and substance that only years of experience, creativity and greater financial security and growth can bring. Amazing athletic and artisitic performances, coupled with terrific music and their trademark audience participation make this a show well worth the price of admission.

Speaking of the price of admission, it's not cheap - close to $100 a ticket. You may, however, be able to take advantage of cheaper tickets (about 25% off) if you join their web mailing list or check with their ticket office.

Running until early October, this is a show to be seen, and easily accessed from the Duchy. Car traffic is heavy, so we recommend walking, cycling, or levitation.

The Spiegel Show

Your rating: None Average: 2.5 (4 votes)

If you thrill to trapeze acts, crave comedy, cherish coloratura, are pleased by pasties, savour saucy strumpets and find burlesque bracing, you owe it to yourself to "whip" on over to The Spiegeltent'n'tavern at Harbourfront Centre.

The One went several weeks ago during a sojourn to the Otherworld to take in Luminato. Housed in an amazing antique tent built and maintained by five generations of the Klessen family of Belgium, the show starts at 8PM and ends around 11. The cabaret atmosphere - the show and its cast are local talent - adds to the fun. While acts are fast-paced and entertaining, our only minor complaint was a feeling that it ran just a tad on the long side.

Prices are reasonable - show tickets, which you should acquire in advance - are $25, beer is in the $5 range, and tasty burgers, fries and other food run around $10.

And, as you may have guessed, it's not a show for kids - 19 and over please, so leave them home to play brutal video games.

Interestingly, the show refuses to end! Originally on only for Luminato, it was extended to the end of June. Now it continues to July 29th.

Don't miss it.
